YSWN Newsletter Issue 02 is Finally OUT!
YSWN Newsletter Issue 02 is Finally OUT I 30 June 2024
Where does one start? I suppose starting at the beginning is always best. The Young Social Workers Network (YSWN) would like to extend heartfelt thanks for the warm reception you gave our first newsletter, launched in March of this year. Your enthusiasm has fuelled our efforts, and we are excited to share that we have since launched our new interactive website https://yswnsa.org.za. This platform amplifies the voices of social workers not only from South Africa, the Southern African Development Community (SADC), and the African region but also from around the globe.

We recently put out a call for volunteer freelance contributors and were thrilled to receive an overwhelming response of more than 70 applicants. After careful consideration, we selected 15 talented writers, some of whom are featured in this issue. We extend our gratitude to these new contributors and welcome them to what we hope will be a fruitful, innovative, and creative space. Our aim is to bring social work from the margins to the centre of critical conversations.
The year 2024 has been marked by election seasons in many countries, including South Africa. Our citizens went to the polls to express their desires for change in governance. Our reporters on the ground have reflected on their experiences during the election process, particularly the role of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in handling the elections. We also delve into the presidential inauguration, highlighted by an intriguing governance structure known as the Government of National Unity last since heard of during the times of former president Nelson Mandela and former president FW De Klerk in the 1994 period when South Africa was thrust out of the vice grip of Apartheid. Our social work contributors offer insights on what we hope this new government will address in terms of policy development and the potential benefits for our communities.
